Today on Sojourner Truth: The Democrats have regained the House, Republicans still have control of the Senate. What are the wider national and international implications? The race for Governor in Georgia and Florida, both Black candidates seems headed for a runoff. Both Stacy Abrams and Andrew Gillum candidates in those races are Black, both were bombarded with racist attacks by their opponents and by Donald Trump. While many are saying that the midterm elections were not about its the economy stupid but its about race stupid, Bernie Sanders has gotten involved in the controversy with his comment that white voters uncomfortable with voting for a Black candidate are not racist. Go figure. Meanwhile in Arizona, the Democrat Kyrsten Sinema has taken a slim lead ahead of her Republican opponent in the Senate seat, so the Senate is not quite settled. Republicans voted for an indicted criminal Duncan Hunter in California and in Nevada, Republicans they voted for a dead man. A slew of women were elected, most of them Democrats, including Muslim, Native American and LGBTQ. In Florida, a measure that will allow 1.3 million felons to vote won, and a series of progressive initiatives won ranging from fight for 15, legalizing marijuana and expanding Medicaid won in some red states. In Oregon sanctuary was protected and in Massachusetts transgender rights were upheld. Trump has fired Jefferson Sessions, the U.S. Attorney General, and replaced him with Matt Whitaker, the former deputy of Sessions. His appointment was controversial out of the Gate as he is negative on the Mueller investigation and even as Mueller is closing in on Trump and his family, Trump is desperate to either shut down the investigation or at least starve it of resources so it cannot function. Sessions did everything policy wise that Trump wanted, but the one thing he did not do was to stop the Mueller investigation. Are Trumps actions another example of interference in the investigation? Also, Trump continued his attack on journalists, singling out journalists of color for special attack, sending several messages to his base as white supremacist in chief. He attacked Latinx Jim Acosta whose White House press credentials have now been revoked. He also attacked two Black women journalists, telling one of them to sit down and telling the other she is asking a racist question. This while Trump gives a pass to Saudi Arabia who are responsible for killing and cutting up a Washington Post reporter in their embassy in Turkey. And yet another mass shooting, this one in Southern California. 13 people were killed including the shooter. The shooter had served as a US Marine, he died from a self-inflicted wound. The mother of one of those killed said don't send me your thoughts and prayers, send me gun control. What can elected officials do about gun control, post-election?
