It is the turn of the East Cornwall to host the next fixture to be held in the area, which will take this coming Sunday February 24th, at the popular course located at Menheniot, Great Trethew. Pony racing heads up the action with two pony races commencing at 11am.
The main event follows at midday, with six races on offer attracting over 100 entries. These include a competitive maiden Flat race for four, five and six-year olds which is sponsored by JRL. Attracting 25 entries this race could well be divided on the day. It looks highly competitive, with recent Barbury runner-up So Socksy (Ben Clarke), Irish imports Exhibit A for the Tracey Parker team, and I Prefer Diamonds for team Chanin, along with Peace Plan(Will Biddick) and Mini Long Stocking who could benefit from a low weight for trainer Joe Tickle.
Next up is the Dawe Hawken & Dodd-sponsored Open Maiden for four, five and six-year olds in which Spring Break from the Will Biddick yard could improve on his third at Barbury. Also entered is Dr Kanaga who could follow upon his maiden flat win at Ffos Las point-to-point course for trainer Ben Clarke. Takeabid is an interesting entry for the Stuart Sampson team, being related to Call Me Sid, Fishy Story and River Myth, and could be a horse to follow for the future.
Prydis and The Kings Head sponsor the Open Maiden race for seven year-olds and over, and one to keep an eye on in the betting arena is Deise Gold for Cornish trainer Jill Dennis, the mare has clocked up some close seconds in Maiden races this season and should get her head in front soon for owner Caroline Furze. They could come up against Skinflint from the Gerry Supple team who ran second to Tide Times at Buckfastleigh in November, also Rare Oul Times (Ed Walker) half length second at Wadebridge last weekend who may find this race comes to soon, as could Thewinnertakesitall (Dean Summersby) who finished third in the same race at Wadebridge.
The feature race of the day is the Mixed Open sponsored by Porsche of Exeter, who will have their large stand and a number of cars on show at the event. Entry Navanman for the John Heard team has already come home in front, with wins at both the Buckfastleigh meeting in November and the Wadebridge December meeting under jockey Bryan Carver. Navanman could come up against Jack Snipe (Robert Hawker) who is equally rated and has won four Chase races under rules when in training with Jeremy Scott, and started off this season’s campaign with a Hunt Members win at Chipley Park. Honest Deed (Dean Summersby) and Heaney (Claire Wonnacott) are also sure to be well fancied after their decent recent outings Wadebridge win for Honest Deed and Chipley Park for Heaney, both were seen in a dual at Upcott Cross last May with a head dividing the two.
Heaney is also entered in the Group Travel-sponsored Conditions race for Novice riders for Millie Wonnacott to ride. Here they may have Chosen Lucky to contend with among the twelve entries. Chosen Lucky has already clocked up two impressive wins this season at Wadebridge under talented young jockey Liam Harrison, and also won this race last season here when ridden by Bryan Carver. It could prove to be another competitive finish if the two are among those battling out the finish.
Finally up is the Jefferys-sponsored Restricted race in which Chipley Park maiden winner Raging Fire (Michael Felton) looks progressive having stormed home at Chipley Park under Will Biddick, coming home three lengths ahead of Minimalistic that day who has since won comfortably at Buckfastleigh. Also the two Joe Tickle-trained entries stand out, another Chipley Park winner George’s Legacy and My King after his Wadebridge win.
The course is a great location for a family day out to enjoy the spring weather, and an opportunity to dust off the picnic baskets, whilst watching some good race action. The course offers bar, hot and cold refreshments and food, bookies and a number of trade stands. Entrance to the course is £10 per person with children under 16 free. Dogs on leads welcome. The course is located off the off the A38 between Saltash and Liskeard. Postcode PL14 3PZ.
