Fight recap of the week FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS ON SPIKE TV Tarver-Cunningham ends in draw (FIGHTNEWS.COM ARTICLE) By John DiSanto at ringside Photos: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment In the main event at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, heavyweights Antonio Tarver, 31-6-1, 22 KOs, and Steve Cunningham, 28-7-1, 13 KOs, fought to a split decision draw. The fight that both fighters had called must win, wound up being a tactical contest with both boxers fighting cautiously. Cunningham built an early lead with his busier style, but Tarver began closing the gap with his heavier punches. Tarver didn’t throw consistently, but when he landed his punches counted. Once Cunningham felt Tarver’s power, he proceeded with caution and allowed Tarver to stay close on the scorecards. Tarver conserved energy every chance he could and just waited for an opening he could exploit. The result was a slow-moving fight that paled in comparison to the thrilling co-feature between Glowacki and Huck. Shocker: Glowacki KOs Huck in eleven (FIGHTNEWS.COM ARTICLE) By Matt Richardson at ringside Photos: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment It took eight and a half months but boxing fans finally have a clear fight of the year. And it was in the cruiserweight division. In a dramatic and violent fight in which both fighters hit the canvas, Poland’s Krzysztof Glowacki upset long-reigning WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck by knocking him out in the eleventh round at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The fight was the co-featured bout to the Antonio Tarver-Steve Cunningham main event on the “Premier Boxing Champions” card on Spike on Friday night. Huck (38-3-1, 26 KO’s) was attempting to break the record for the most consecutive cruiserweight title defenses in boxing history (14) but his opponent wasn’t so agreeable. Glowacki (25-0, 16 KO’s), fighting in front of a passionate, pro-Polish crowd, hurt Huck in the first and knocked him down once in the eleventh before stopping him along the ropes in the same round. It was the fight in between Glowacki’s early and late success, however, which showed both men’s heart and courage. Glowacki was almost knocked out himself in the sixth after getting drilled with a hard left hook that left him staring up from the canvas. It was that type of fight. SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHT PBC ON NBCSN Bute KOs Di Luisa; Alvarez defeats Prieto By Dave Spencer at ringside Former IBF super middleweight world titleholder Lucian Bute (32-2, 25 KOs) scored a fourth round TKO over Andrea Di Luisa (17-3, 13 KOs) on Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. Bute dropped Di Luisa with an overhand left and Di Luisa’s corner threw in the towel during Bute’s follow up barrage. Time was 1:53. In a clash between between undefeated light heavyweights, 2008 Olympian and WBC #3 Eleider Alvarez (18-0, 10 KOs) hammered out a hard fought twelve round unanimous decision over powerful but crude WBO #6 Isidro Ranoni Prieto (24-1-3, 20 KOs). Scores were 117-111 across the board. NEWS OF THE WEEK COTTO VS CANELO IS A GO!!! NOVEMBER 21 AT MANDALAY BAY CASINO IN LAS VEGAS Cotto, Canelo Quick Quotes An international media conference call was held on Wednesday with Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez to announce their PPV super fight on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Miguel Cotto: “This fight is just another fight…For me, Canelo is a victory for my career. Being the best Puerto Rican fighter is not of my interest. I’m happy with my career.” Freddie Roach: I don’t think Canelo is stronger than us and I don’t think that’s a factor in the fight. I think we’re stronger than him. I think we’re the better puncher and we’ll show that on fight night. Canelo Alvarez: “This is a fight I’ve been craving and wanting so bad…I am very happy that we have managed this fight. I am very grateful to all the fans.” Oscar de la Hoya: “Mark my words – the PPV cost will be a lot less than $100 and it’ll be worth every dollar…the fight is huge now. Obviously we recognized that in May Mayweather and Pacquiao was taking place and now that that fiasco is all over with we can focus on promoting the biggest fight in the history of the sport in November.” Michael Yormark (Roc Nation): “We haven’t focused on the undercard, but Andre Ward is a consideration.” Maidana could return later this year Former world champion Marcos Maidana has gone through some medical exams at the ATILRA Clinic in Sunchales, Argentina and is said to be planning to travel to the U.S. in September to hook up with trainer Robert Garcia for a possible fight in November. Maidana hasn’t been seen in the ring since his September 13, 2014 rematch against Floyd Mayweather. BOXING NEWS Golovkin-Lemieux sets MSG box office record A new Madison Square Garden box office record has been set by the highly anticipated world middleweight championship title unification between WBA/IBO and “Interim” WBC champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, (33-0, 30 KOs), and IBF Champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) headlining the historic venue on October 17. A pre-sale of over 6,000 tickets established a new record at the “Mecca of Boxing”, shattering all previous marks for boxing events. Just announced, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) will defend his WBC flyweight world championship against former two-division world champion Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria (36-4, 22 KOs) in the co-feature. “The interest from fans in this middleweight title unification has been overwhelming,” said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions. “Madison Square Garden has never had a faster pre-sale for a boxing event. We’re ecstatic at the response from the pre-sale and look forward to very strong ticket sales continuing throughout the promotion. With this high level of interest, we strongly encourage boxing fans to purchase their tickets well in advance.” “This record-breaking pre-sale only confirms that this fight will be one of the most exciting of the year as the best meets the best for middleweight supremacy,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Fans are thirsty for action and they know that is what David Lemieux and Gennady Golovkin will deliver on October 17 at Madison Square Garden.” BOXING NEWS Mosley-Mayorga PPV co-feature announced Unbeaten featherweight Joel Diaz Jr. (19-0, 15 KOs) will be fighting against Luis Arceo (28-13-4, 18 KOs) in the co-main event of the “Mosley vs. Mayorga 2? pay-per-view on August 29 at the Forum in Inglewood, California. The card is promoted by GoBox Promotions, headed by Shane Mosley. “Diaz is a tremendous talent and a future world champion,” said Mosley. “We are excited to have him stacking the Mosley-Mayorga PPV card because it accomplishes GoBox Promotions’ mission of providing the best fights possible.” BOXING NEWS Arum says he can make Manny Pacquiao-Amir Khan clash early next year By James Slater Amir Khan, who has been repeatedly turned down as an opponent by superstar Floyd Mayweather Junior (and can now, in light of Floyd’s “last” fight having been announced and retirement for the 48-0 master seemingly imminent, forever say goodbye to the dream fight) deserves a big fight. According to Top Rank CEO bob Arum, Khan can have one next year. In a exclusive with The Telegraph, Arum said he is looking to make a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Khan next year, most likely in the Middle East. “This kid Amir Khan keeps shooting his mouth off about Manny Pacquiao,” Arum told The Telegraph’s Gareth A. Davies. “I can arrange for Khan to fight Pacquiao. Amir Khan has been begging Mayweather for a fight and now he can get a major fight. I’m not a hard guy to deal with. I’m not going to mess them around. That’s [Mayweather Vs. Andre Berto on Sept. 12th] a farce. Mayweather should have fought Khan next. One thing’s for sure, Pacquiao is not ducking Khan. Pacquiao will fight him. I don’t know if Khan will fight Pacquiao, but it’s available.” Bronco Billy needs rated foe to break into top 15 (FIGHTNEW.COM ARTICLE) broncobillyko300 By Karl Freitag 50-year-old heavyweight contender Bronco Billy Wright (48-4, 39 KOs) is currently rated #17 by the WBC. He hasn’t tasted defeat since 1998, currently holds three WBC regional titles and has 15 straight KO wins, but Bronco Billy hasn’t been able to break into the WBC’s top 15. And it doesn’t look like he will until he beats a rated opponent. We asked WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman what it would take to get Bronco Billy into the top 15. “Billy Wright is an exceptional human being,” said Sulaiman. “Very dear person, family man. A boxer who represents the best of everything. The WBC has done its best to support him, but there is a limit to what the WBC organization can do, because we are not managers or promoters. We have asked Billy to land a fight against a rated opponent, because most of his fights end up being against mediocre opposition. That doesn’t help his case because the committee requests fights and then he can’t land a fight against a rated opponent so it’s been a cycle. One of my goals is to help him find a fight against a fighter who could give him the opportunity to demonstrate what he can do in the higher level.” Technically, with the 300-pound Wright sitting at #17, he could qualify to challenge WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, although a vote would be required. Wilder is looking to make a voluntary defense on September 26 with no opponent named so far. Jhonny Gonzalez Update By Gabriel F Cordero There is a strong possibility that Mexican former two-division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez could be on the September 12 Floyd Mayweather vs. Andre Berto card in Las Vegas. Gonzalez’ promoter Promociones del Pueblo has mentioned the names of Jonathan Oquendo and Jayson Velez as possible opponents. The fight could be at super featherweight or an agreed upon catch weight. Quillin-Zerafa/Bundrage-Charlo on NBC Sept 12 Undefeated middleweight Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (31-0-1, 22 KOs) will headline in a 12-round middleweight bout against Michael Zerafa (17-1, 9 KOs) while super welterweight world champion Cornelius “K-9? Bundrage (34-5, 19 KOs) defends against undefeated rising star Jermall Charlo (21-0, 16 KOs) on a Premier Boxing Champions on NBC telecast September 12 from Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut starting at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.
