By May of 1942 Germany had occupied Europe and was attempting to bomb England into submission. Japan had attacked the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor just months before and had sacked the Phillipines , brutally killing over 10,000 surrendered soldiers and civilians. With half of the United States fleet damaged or sunk, Japan controlled the Pacific.
Knowing that the US needed to keep a base at the tiny island of Midway, Yamamoto made plans to attack it, knowing the weakened US Fleet would have to respond, and in so doing, Yamamoto, with many more ships and superior aircraft, would destroy them. But Admiral Nimitz, planning the American response, had his own surprise planned for Yamamoto.
Before 1942, naval warfare was fought by battleships and submarines. The Coral Sea and Midway battles, pitting carrier fleet against carrier fleet, proved beyond the shadow of doubt the power, range, and effectiveness of the aircraft carrier, and changed naval warfare and warfare forever.
