But we have our own set of standards and norms and our own aesthetic.”
“One of my little mottos is ‚Change is happening all the time‘ and the fact that the client says something at minute three doesn’t mean that by minute seven they won’t be saying something else.”
“Client autonomy, radical acceptance, and staying on the surface is all about respect. It’s all about respecting your client as a human being who has the right to live their life (…) in the way they want to.”
“These tiny, tiny, tiny things that look so small, they are valuable because they offer a difference that can be built on, and they offer a sign that change is possible, and indeed inevitable, and they offer a sign that the client has more control in their lives that they thought.”
Dr. Mark McKergow
Show Notes In today’s episode, we talk with Dr. Mark McKergow, co-director of the Centre for Solutions Focus at Work, Director of Host Leadership, writer, consultant, speaker, academic, and thought leader, about what fascinates Mark about Solution Focus,
how he got in touch with Solution Focus or how James Wilk revived him,
what makes Solution Focus beautiful or the aesthetic of Solution Focus,
how talking about aesthetics can help to look at different things, like e.g. different therapy models or conversational approaches,
the five key features that make Solution Focus beautiful 1.) brevity 2.) client autonomy 3.) radical acceptance 4.) staying at the surface 5.) the value of small differences,
a beautiful example of radical acceptance in Mark’s practice,
the autonomy of the employee and the importance of context in host leadership,
the value of radical acceptance.
The challenge of the week: „Notice a time when you’d like to argue with someone and find an other way of continuing the conversation.“
