I’m your host Noah Metzger and today we’ll be reviewing Pilgrim’s Progress: Journey to Heaven. Pilgrim’s Progress: Journey to Heaven released back in 2008 from DRC Films is an adaptation of the classic tale by John Bunyan, Pilgrim’s progress. Giving the film a modern-day feel this film is insightful and intriguing as you follow the character Christian on a remarkable journey to the Celestial city. If you’re interested in finding out more about this film after our review, you can find it on our website at www.fishflix.com. Pilgrim's Progress; Journey to heaven is a modern adaptation of John Bunyan's beloved classic tale. Amazing visual effects, beautiful locations and a wonderful cast bring to life the story that has inspired each generation for hundreds of years. Follow Christian and his companies on the great journey from the City of Destruction to the gates of Heaven. Along the way, the pilgrims face obstacles large and small, man-made and demon-spawned. Beyond the gripping drama, Bunyan's powerful allegory teaches us the hazards and hopes of the Christian life, and the triumphant glory that awaits all who faithfully follow the King of Kings! I’ve experienced a few different takes on the Pilgrim’s Progress story, all of which have been very interesting and intriguing. This one stands out to me as being the very best film adaptation I have ever watched, as it features some impressive visual effects and a straightforward and exciting narrative. What I appreciated most about this film was its ability to capture all of the unique allegories and metaphors through the progression of the story. Some are obvious and literally staring you right in the face. But others are subtler and require you to really engage yourself in the story in order to catch them. I like this style of storytelling as it forces the viewer to engage. They need to invest themselves in the story in order to catch all of the metaphors and allegories. There’s a lot to this movie and I appreciated its willingness to both stick to and deviate from the original source material when it needed to. There were parts that were exactly true to the book, which I appreciated. But it also attempted to have a modern feel, which I appreciated as well. Because the movie is set in the modern day it appears very relatable. Our protagonist, Christian starts off in a simple neighborhood, that could very easily look just like the neighborhood you live in. This makes it easy for us to identify with him and want him to succeed in his journey. Pilgrim’s Progress has parts that span the spectrum of theology. There’s scenes that capture the hope and joy of Christianity and other scenes that show the struggle of being tempted by this world. There is so much we have to look out for in our world today and this movie features some reminders of how to guard ourselves against the evil things in this world. While the production quality was certainly lower, they were able to handle their limitations expertly, making it still appear like a believable and quality movie. I really enjoyed Pilgrim’s Progress Journey to Heaven and would highly encourage you to watch it and really engage with it. If you look carefully for the allegories and messages, you’ll begin to discern some very real truths throughout the story! This Christian movie is mostly free of language, and only uses certain words when referencing a place. The one thing to look out for in this film is violence, as it features a few scenes of fighting and both physical and spiritual warfare.
