Highlander Retrospective – Is it the Best “Bad” Film Franchise of All Time? - ACT 301
Drunk Film School
What is the Best “So Bad Its Good” or “Best of the Worst” Film franchise ever? We analysis and discuss the film franchise of Highlander and make an argument that this may be that film franchise.
The “So Bad They’re Good” genre (or “Best of the Worst”, a term recently made popular from RedLetterMedia, link below) has always been around ever since Ed Wood was making his budgeted, cheesy scifi/horror films of the 50s, including what is to be considered the greatest “So Bad They’re Good” film of all time, Plan 9 from Outer Space. The term refers to that the movie is so bad, that it becomes humorous and funny. The TV show, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is also based off this idea, that movies that are so horrendously bad, they form their own type of unique entertainment.
Troll 2, Miami Connection and The Room are all well known as great examples of So Bad They’re Good movies, but what is the best So Bad They’re Good Film Franchise? We argue the Film Franchise “Highlander” could be that franchise because they are bad, and none of them connect to each other.
Topics of Episode
Highlander –
The first and best of the Highlander Franchise, still many things are wrong with it including Sean Connery, a Spaniard with a Scottish accent? Who are the Immortals and why do they have to chop each other’s heads off? Why does Connor MacLeod like professional wrestling? The woman forensic scientist, Brenda Wyatt, also happens to also be a published author and expert of ancient swords?
Highlander 2: The Quickening –
What the hell is going on? Are the Immortals Aliens or from our Past (which makes no sense)? If they are transported from a different planet, or the past, were they then not born in the present time they are awaken? Why didn’t Sean Connery and Chris Lambert know each other in the first one while they were best buds in the second prior to their meeting in the original? Bat People? Did Michael Ironside help save this movie? When did Connor MacLoed become a highly respected Scientist? Wasn’t Sean Connery Dead? Why is he alive and can teleport whenever called?
Highlander: The Final Dimension –
So if Mario Van Peebles and his stooges were always around, how can the Quickening have happened? So now Connor MacLeod has adopted a child, has he always have this child? After Connor kills Mario, did the Quickening finally happen? Now we have Magic?
Highlander: Endgame –
So there are watchers who drain the Immortals Blood? Why? The new bad guy, where was he and was he alive in the first 3 movies, same with Connor MacLeod’s cousin Duncan? Donnie Yen was badass throughout the movie but gets killed with one swipe of the sword, while he knew the attack was coming? Why didn’t Connor and Duncan just attack the main bad guy 2 on 1, the bad guy seemed to not have a problem using such tactics.
