A new, thinner Apple iMac and another new $200 Android tablet from an e-book seller are upon us. Sit down, settle in and hit that play button because it’s time for another edition of the Gadget Lab Show. This week’s episode starts with staff writer Christina Bonnington showing reviews editor Michael Calore around the latest iMac. As you may know by know, the user experience from the front of this sweet machine is essentially the same as the previous all-in-one desktop from Cupertino. Ah, but look at it from the sides and back — you know, the perspective you never look at — and you’ll see a lot has changed. Thin is in and the optical drive is out. To make the iMac thinner than our pay envelope, Apple had to trim some fat. Out went the CD/DVD player/burner. However, Apple is happy to sell you an $80 USB-powered Super Drive for all your optical drive needs. If you want Blu-ray you’re out of luck here. Christina has been using the iMac the last couple of weeks and there’s a lot to like in Apple’s latest. Stay tuned for a full review. Next up, staff writer Roberto Baldwin stops by with the Arc, the new Android slate from Kobo. Its main attributes are awfully familiar to anyone who’s shopped for a tablet recently: Android OS, 7-inch display, $200 price tag. Arc runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, skinned in a Kobo user interface that sorts your content into “tapestries” that you can shuffle to see books, magazine, apps and anything else you have loaded on your Arc. Roberto is just getting started using the Arc, but a review should be up after the holidays. Speaking of Holidays, the Gadget Lab crew is taking next week off, but we’ll be back the week after that with a fresh episode of Gadget Lab goodness. But, before we take a break, we have a holiday giveaway. The Etre Fivepoint Gloves are a favorite of ours. They keep your hands warm but still let your tap and swipe your way around a smartphone or tablet. We’ve got an extra pair lying around, so we’re giving them to a lucky Gadget Lab viewer/reader. All you need to do is, over the holiday break, snap a photo of the oldest, most archaic and outdated mobile phone you can find. Tweet the photo to us at @GadgetLab. We’ll closely examine all of the submissions and choose the most creative pic of the most ancient phone and announce the winner in our next episode. So, happy holidays, happy new year and tweet us that photo! See y’all in 2013.
