Today, Katharine Ryan (University of Tennessee, Knoxville) joins us to talk about her work looking at the sinuses of the cranium. Do these have a functional purpose or are they characteristics that are byproducts of the evolution of some other phenotypic traits?
Kate also guides us through the problems with biological essentialism, whether with regard to sex or gender or ancestry, and how anthropologists today have responsibilities of communicating clearly the science of human variation. Towards the end of the show, we discuss mental health and how important it is to maintain one’s own wellbeing, both in and outside of academia.
