Amsterdam%20man%20was%20author%20and%20aeronautic%20expertBy%20Bob%20Cudmore,%20Focus%20on%20History,%20Daily%20Gazette,%2007-19-2008%20The%20story%20of%20Amsterdam%20native%20Adam%20Golab%20came%20to%20the%20foreground%20recently%20because%20the%20Walter%20Elwood%20Museum%20of%20the%20Mohawk%20Valley%20needed%20copies%20of%20Golab’s%20popular%20books%20for%20the%20museum%20gift%20shop.%20“Adventures%20of%20a%20Small%20Boy%20in%20His%20Small%20World”%20was%20published%20in%201994%20and%20illustrated%20by%20the%20author.%20Ann%20Peconie,%20director%20at%20the%20museum,%20said%20she%20gets%20more%20requests%20for%20Golab’s%20“The%20Mighty%20and%20Awesome%20Chuctanunda%20Creeks%20Runs%20Through%20a%20Limestone%20City,”%20published%20in%201999.%20After%20detective%20work%20on%20the%20part%20of%20history%20buff%20John%20Szkaradek,%20copies%20of%20one%20of%20the%20books%20were%20secured%20from%20Golab’s%20daughter,%20Carole%20Martin,%20who%20lives%20in%20Amsterdam.%20The%20book%20focusing%20on%20the%20Chuctanunda%20Creek%20is%20now%20available%20at%20the%20300%20Guy%20Park%20Avenue%20museum%20gift%20shop%20for%20$10.%20The%20earlier%20book%20is%20out%20of%20print.Golab,%20born%20in%201920,%20was%20married%20to%20the%20late%20Regina%20Majewski%20and%20they%20had%20two%20other%20children--Lisbeth%20Golab%20of%20Amsterdam%20and%20James%20Golab%20of%20North%20Carolina.Adam%20Golab%20studied%20aeronautic%20engineering%20at%20the%20Bedford%20Technical%20School%20in%20Brooklyn.%20From%201940%20until%201943,%20he%20was%20employed%20at%20Precision%20Instrument%20Company%20in%20Brooklyn%20and%20later%20worked%20as%20an%20aircraft%20mechanic%20at%20Roosevelt%20Field%20on%20Long%20Island.%20He%20served%20in%20the%20U.S.%20Navy%20from%201944%20to%201948,%20including%20a%20stint%20aboard%20the%20aircraft%20carrier%20USS%20Bon%20Homme%20Richard.%20He%20returned%20to%20Amsterdam%20in%201949%20when%20he%20secured%20a%20position%20at%20Schenectady%20General%20Electric,%20first%20in%20the%20steam%20turbine%20plant%20and%20then%20at%20GE%20Research%20and%20Development%20in%20Niskayuna.%20He%20was%20a%20specialist%20in%20materials%20and%20processes%20and%20retired%20in%201982.%20His%20wife%20died%20in%202000%20and%20the%20author%20died%20in%202004.%20They%20made%20their%20home%20on%20Wallins%20Corners%20Road.Martin%20said%20her%20father’s%20first%20book%20was%20a%20surprise%20to%20her%20but%20that%20she%20was%20the%20typesetter%20for%20book%20number%20two.%20She%20has%20followed%20in%20her%20father’s%20footsteps%20to%20some%20extent.%20Martin%20today%20works%20at%20GE’s%20Niskayuna%20research%20headquarters.“Adventures%20of%20a%20Small%20Boy%20in%20His%20Small%20World”%20tells%20tales%20of%20Golab’s%20youth.%20He%20lived%20on%20Grand%20Street%20on%20Park%20Hill,%20adjacent%20to%20the%20Bigelow-Sanford%20carpet%20mill.%20His%20parents,%20Joseph%20and%20Katherine%20Kosiba%20Golab,%20were%20Polish%20immigrants,%20both%20of%20whom%20worked%20in%20the%20rug%20mills.%20Martin%20recalled%20one%20story%20from%20her%20father’s%20first%20book.%20Since%20the%20carpet%20mills%20used%20the%20North%20Chuctanunda%20Creek%20as%20a%20dumping%20ground%20for%20dye%20and%20other%20waste,%20parents%20could%20tell%20if%20their%20children%20had%20been%20playing%20in%20the%20creek%20if%20their%20clothing%20had%20picked%20up%20unusual%20colors.%20Golab%20also%20wrote%20how%20adventurous%20boys%20would%20walk%20on%20the%20top%20level%20of%20the%20girders%20of%20the%20old%20Pulaski%20Bridge%20that%20spanned%20the%20creek,%20connecting%20Park%20Hill%20with%20the%20city’s%20other%20traditionally%20Polish%20neighborhood,%20Reid%20Hill.“The%20Mighty%20and%20Awesome%20Chuctanunda%20Creeks%20Runs%20Through%20a%20Limestone%20City,”%20according%20to%20Martin,%20is%20the%20story%20of%20Amsterdam%20and%20the%20North%20Chuctanunda%20Creek.%20The%20creek%20is%20a%20character%20in%20the%20book%20(called%20Chuck)%20and%20the%20author%20asks%20Chuck%20to%20describe%20places,%20people%20and%20things%20along%20the%20route%20the%20stream%20takes%20on%20its%20way%20from%20its%20source%20north%20of%20Amsterdam%20to%20the%20Mohawk%20River.Golab%20had%20other%20interests%20in%20addition%20to%20writing.%20He%20was%20a%20member%20of%20the%20Sacandaga%20Boat%20Club%20over%2040%20years%20and%20built%20his%20first%20boat.%20He%20was%20a%20master%20carpenter%20and%20woodworker%20who%20built%20his%20own%20home%20and%20the%20custom%20designed%20furniture%20in%20it.%20He%20was%20a%20photographer%20and%20worked%20on%20a%20photographic%20almanac%20of%20historic%20barns%20of%20the%20Mohawk%20Valley.%20He%20enjoyed%20radio%20controlled%20airplanes%20and%20was%20a%20member%20of%20the%20Empire%20State%20Aerosciences%20Museum%20in%20Schenectady.%20He%20belonged%20to%20a%20number%20of%20historical%20organizations,%20including%20the%20Elwood%20Museum.
