In today’s episode, Emma Walker joins Tori on the podcast to talk about her blog, and how she’s handled the transition from being in school to being an independent blogger. She’s at an exciting point in her life, with a wedding and a new house on the horizon, and she talks about how she’s balancing these things with her social media presence. They talk about anxiety, transition, and finding authenticity in today’s world.
Hot Seat Introduction: If she could be any character in a TV Show, she would be Rachel from Friends. The three items she can’t leave the house without are her phone, chapstick, and sunglasses. The first thing she does in the morning is to get her dog Stella and snuggle with her, and she usually checks her phone in the morning as well. If she could visit anywhere in the world, she would visit Italy. Her new go-to workout is Barre, and also pilates. The person she admires most in the world is her fiancé, because of how well he treats others.
Key Takeaways:
[6:15] - Emma graduated college almost four months ago, and it’s been an interesting stage in life. She has been a blogger/influencer for seven years now, and is fixing to get married and buy a house.
[8:10] - She got started in the blog space in her junior year of high school, primarily as an outlet to showcase her pictures, sharing outfits and makeup. When she started interacting with other smaller bloggers was one of her first introductions into her blog being something more than just social media.
[13:05] - Emma made the switch to “With A City Dream” in her senior year of high school. With this switch it became more about what she’s actually doing in her life rather than the produced photoshoots she had been posting. Her blog is more authentic now, and it allows her to connect with others.
[14:53] - Emma talks about balancing a “curated authenticity” with her low points in her blog so that people can come to connect with both aspects. There is also a matter of respecting boundaries and knowing when you’re sharing too much. Starting her blog early helped her establish boundaries about internet safety.
[19:30] - One of the big struggles of growing her brand was accepting that her blog was something she was proud of herself for. Now, if it makes her happy to share it or it brings her joy, that’s what is most important for her. Another struggle was learning to separate her worth from the number of followers she had. It’s more important to have followers relate to the content and that you connect with, rather than sacrifice your content for followers.
[23:05] - One of the reasons people are becoming more obsessed with followers and engagement is because influencers are making a lot of money in this business. Emma cautions against doing it just for the money.
[25:25] - As a society, people are opening up more about mental health and the pressure of social media. Opening up about her own struggles helped her connect to her authenticity. She posted what made her feel better, and actually got a lot of engagement on these posts. The blog has allowed her personal growth in her style and confidence.
[33:30] = In the midst of all the changes in her life, Emma is looking forward to being able to look back on this time and feeling grounded in the present.
[36:30] - Looking ahead, Emma knows that she’ll still be doing her blog, and changing as the space changes.
[38:00] - Emma wants people to see her as a work in progress. She was living her life with so much fear, and has released herself from that anxiety so she can achieve more of her goals.
[40:45] - Setting goals and looking forward to things is great, but don’t discredit what you’re doing now. It is helping you get to where you want to be.
